History of Alagappapuram

The recorded history of the town commences from Islamists and Tamil Mudaliyar who visited Alagappapuram and inhabited. The town acquired its name from 'Azhagappa Mudaliar', an illustrious Mudaliar who resided in Alagappapuram, in acknowledgement of his meritable services to the town. The Muslims, aborigines Dravidas, Mudaliars and Nadars exercised a lot of businesses for their bread and butter.

It is believed that they were primarily into weaving business. Nevertheless, they faced heavy losses in their line of work which successively forced them to move out of the town. The year 1910 is significant in the history of Alagappapuram as the Petchiparai dam was opened and subsequently agriculture and related line of work became the primary contributor to the economic system of this small town.
